For nearly 40 years, bone health has been evaluated primarily through imaging to determine density. But density is only part of what makes a bone strong—and most fragility fractures occur in people whose bone-density results do not meet the threshold for osteoporosis. That gap has enormous consequences. Approximately 54 million Americans have osteoporosis or low bone mass. One in two women and up to one in four men over age 50 will experience an osteoporosis-related fracture. Among Medicare beneficiaries alone, osteoporotic fractures cost an estimated $57 billion annually—a figure projected to exceed $95 billion by 2040. BoneScore® is creating a new category in bone health: the direct assessment of bone material strength. Our OsteoProbe® technology is the first and only FDA-cleared device that measures the resistance of bone tissue to microindentation. Unlike DXA, CT and other imaging technologies—which assess bone mineral density and infer strength—OsteoProbe physically tests how the bone tissue itself responds to force. The procedure is performed at the point of care, uses no radiation and produces a Bone Material Strength Index, reported as a BoneScore®. It gives physicians an objective, complementary data point for patients whose bone quality may not be fully reflected by density alone—including patients with osteopenia, diabetes, chronic steroid exposure, prior fragility fractures or concerns before orthopedic surgery. BoneScore is not replacing bone density. We are completing the picture. Our goal is to make bone material strength a standard part of evaluating bone health—so physicians can better understand which bones are likely to hold, which may not, and where a density measurement alone may leave important questions unanswered.
