About Usability Works at Carilion Clinic

Usability Works helps medical device and digital health companies develop safer, more usable technologies by connecting rigorous human factors engineering with the realities of clinical care. Embedded within Carilion Clinic’s Center for Simulation, Research & Patient Safety in Roanoke, Virginia, we combine human factors expertise with access to healthcare professionals, realistic clinical environments, and the operational perspective of a major health system. This allows products to be evaluated with representative users in settings that reflect where care is actually delivered, including operating rooms, emergency and critical care environments, ambulatory settings, EMS, and the home. We provide end-to-end usability engineering support across the product development lifecycle, from early user research, workflow analysis, and use-related risk assessment through formative evaluation and human factors validation. Our work is aligned with IEC 62366-1, ISO 14971, FDA human factors guidance, and applicable design control requirements. By bringing together human factors expertise, clinical access, and high-fidelity simulation, Usability Works helps innovators identify risks earlier, make informed design decisions, strengthen regulatory submissions, and bring technologies to market that work safely and effectively in the real world.
