CILEX (The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives) is the professional association and governing body for Chartered Legal Executive lawyers, paralegals, and other legal professionals. We champion career-long support, professional recognition, and regulatory oversight for our members. We represent over 18,000 members and are proud to offer a progressive alternative route into law—open to school leavers, graduates (with or without law degrees), legal support staff, and career changers. No law degree is required to qualify through CILEX, but our routes are equally suited to those who already hold one. Our competency-based training and qualifications are designed to meet the evolving needs of the legal profession, combining academic study with practical experience. CILEX-qualified professionals work across all sectors of the legal services industry, including private practice, in-house legal teams, local authorities, and the court service. They are recognised for their skills, rigour and practical approach. We also work to influence change in the legal system—campaigning on behalf of our members and in the public interest to improve access to justice, promote inclusion, and modernise the profession.
