Every 15 minutes, a child or young person in the UK acquires a brain injury. It can happen in an instant, through an accident, illness, stroke, brain tumour, poisoning, or infection such as meningitis or encephalitis. Yet the effects can last a lifetime. A childhood acquired brain injury can impact how a child learns, communicates, behaves, builds relationships, and experiences the world around them. It affects not only the child, but their entire family, often bringing uncertainty, isolation, and challenges that can continue long after hospital treatment has ended. Since 1991, the Child Brain Injury Trust has been helping children, young people, and families navigate life after acquired brain injury. We provide specialist information, emotional support, advocacy, training, and practical guidance to ensure no family has to face this journey alone. Our work reaches families, schools, healthcare professionals, legal professionals, and community organisations across the UK, helping to improve understanding of childhood acquired brain injury and create better outcomes for the children and young people affected.
