First-principles analysis of constitutional and foreign policy — history, current events, and what keeps people free.
About Consequential Actions
Consequential Actions is an independent analysis platform examining constitutional questions and American foreign policy through a first-principles lens. Every piece we publish returns to a single evaluative question: did this leave people more free, or more governed? We apply that lens to the historical record and to current events with the same standard — rigorous sourcing, transparent method, and arguments built to survive scrutiny rather than to score points. Our active flagship series, Self-Evident: The Road to 1776, traces the intellectual origins of American liberty from ancient sources through the founding — pairing long-form historical research with contemporary application. Our recently completed series, Empire of Liberty, examines the arc of American foreign policy — how a republic founded in suspicion of standing armies and foreign entanglement became a global military power, and what that transformation cost in liberty at home. Across twenty episodes and companion essays, it traces the decisions, justifications, and precedents that built the modern national-security state, holding each against the standard the founders set. Earlier series have taken up the growth of the administrative state, the expansion of federal power from the general-welfare clause forward, and the ideologies and party systems that shaped them. The through-line is a conviction that principles do not change with the size of the crowd or the title of the person holding power. We take that seriously as an analytical discipline, not a slogan.
