About The Center for Social Development at Washington University in St. Louis
The Center for Social Development (CSD) is a hub for applied research. We create and test social innovations that broaden well-being for individuals, families and communities. We incubate policies that can be scaled to reach millions, and we create new fields of study to advance social development. We also train emerging scholars and practitioners in the effective conduct of social research. CSD operates locally, nationally, and globally from our home base in the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis. What We Stand For At CSD, we embrace the promise of a fully inclusive society in which empirically grounded policies enable everyone to participate and reach their potential. We embrace the principles of rigorous, independent, applied social research, which aims to deepen scientific knowledge and is focused on translating results into action with meaningful impacts. Expertise Led by Founding Director Michael Sherraden, CSD is engaged with national and international networks of researchers, practitioners and policy experts. The CSD team and our partners are experts in social development and public policy. We are internationally recognized for applied research and policy innovations related to financial capability, and asset building and civic engagement. Our policy design and research on Child Development Accounts (CDAs) have been rigorously tested through the randomized SEED for Oklahoma Kids policy experiment. Results from this experiment have informed CDA policies now serving millions of young people in the United States and other countries.
