About Dade Legal Aid - Put Something Back
Since 1949, Miami-Dade County Legal Aid has been providing free civil legal services to qualifying low-income residents of Miami-Dade County. The first “Legal Aid” Committee of the Dade County Bar Association was formed in 1939 to provide free legal services for impoverished Miamians and returning Veterans. In its early years Legal Aid’s mission was to provide critical legal assistance in areas including domestic relations, returning veterans’ needs, consumer, small claims, landlord/tenant, guardianship, & employment matters. As the need for legal services intensified, the agency expanded its priorities to include divorce, paternity, custody, visitation, child support, name change, domestic violence, guardianship for an adult incapacitated family member, housing, benefits, bankruptcy, foreclosure, heirs property, children’s issues and foster youth advocacy, and services for persons with disabilities. In 1991, Dade Legal Aid and The Eleventh Judicial Circuit established the Put Something Back Pro Bono Project as the official program of the circuit. Legal Aid’s team of dedicated staff attorneys combined with the support of the private bar and pro bono attorneys, makes it a model pro bono program in the nation. Pro bono attorneys handle civil legal matters including Family Law, Domestic Violence, Guardianship, Child & Foster Youth Advocacy, Housing, Foreclosure, Bankruptcy, Guardian ad Litem, Nonprofits, Patent and Venture Law. Priority goes to protecting the rights of marginalized children, families, the elderly, persons with disabilities, debtors, victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, fraud and disasters, those facing wrongful eviction or loss of a home, and other qualifying individuals. Over the decades, thousands of individuals have received life changing services giving Legal Aid funders, sponsors, and supporters the biggest bang for their buck anywhere!
