There is a great need for knowledge on how to protect the oceans and make their use by humans more sustainable: Seas and oceans are among the most important ecosystems on Earth, play a central role in global climate processes and influence the lives of millions of people. In 2019, German marine research community joined forces with the federal government and the northern German states to found the German Marine Research Alliance (DAM) - one of the largest marine research alliances in the world. DAM connects 23 leading German marine research institutions with the goal of strengthening the sustainable management of coasts, seas and oceans. With its activities in the core areas of research, transfer, data management & digitalization as well as coordination of infrastructures, DAM develops solution-oriented knowledge and provides options for action - as a basis for decision-making for politics, industry and civil society.
