About Office of the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice - Washington, D.C.

The mission of the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice (DMPSJ) is to provide direction, guidance, support, and coordination to the District’s public safety agencies to develop and lead interagency public safety initiatives to improve the quality of life in the District’s neighborhoods. The missions of the agencies of the Public Safety and Justice cluster are dynamic, complex, yet interconnected. Each plays a critical role in the overall health and functioning of our public safety and justice ecosystem which is centered around prevention, intervention/enforcement, accountability, and rehabilitation. Each day, more than 10,000 District of Columbia employees work in our cluster which includes: Department of Corrections, Department of Forensic Sciences, Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services, Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department, Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency, Mayor’s Office on Returning Citizen Affairs, Metropolitan Police Department, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Office of Human Rights, Office of Unified Communications, Office of Victim Services and Justice Grants, Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, and D.C. National Guard. Lindsey Appiah, deputy mayor for public safety and justice, was appointed by Mayor Muriel Bowser in January 2023.
