About Friends of the Pittsburgh Fisher House

Friends of the Pittsburgh Fisher House is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting military and veteran families while a loved one receives medical treatment in the Pittsburgh region. The Pittsburgh Fisher House provides a home away from home where eligible families can stay free of charge, allowing them to remain close to a veteran or service member during treatment. Located near VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System facilities, the House offers a homelike environment where families can rest, share meals, and support one another during difficult times. While these organizations work closely together, each serves a distinct role. The Department of Veterans Affairs operates the Pittsburgh Fisher House and provides staffing, facility management, and day-to-day operations through the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. The Fisher House Foundation is the national organization that builds and supports the network of Fisher Houses located at military and VA medical centers across the United States and Europe. Fisher Houses are gifted to the military services or Department of Veterans Affairs, which then operate them locally. Friends of the Pittsburgh Fisher House serves as the local community partner. Through charitable contributions, volunteer support, corporate partnerships, and community engagement, the Friends provide many of the programs, meals, furnishings, household essentials, and family-support initiatives that help transform the House from a place to stay into a place that feels like home. Since 2012, the Friends have worked alongside the VA, Fisher House Foundation, volunteers, donors, and community partners to ensure military and veteran families receive the comfort, stability, and support they need during some of life’s most challenging moments. Through these efforts, families can focus on what matters most: being together when it matters most.
