Das Fraunhofer-Institut für Hochfrequenzphysik und Radartechnik FHR befindet sich an der Südgrenze von Nordrhein-Westfalen auf der Höhe des Wachtbergs nahe Bonn-Bad Godesberg. Als weit sichtbares Kennzeichen kennt jedermann in der Region die „Kugel“ – mit 49 Metern Durchmesser das weltweit größte Radom - für unser Weltraum-Beobachtungs-Radar TIRA (tracking and imaging radar). Das Institut entwickelt Konzepte, Verfahren und Systeme für elektromagnetische Sensorik, insbesondere im Bereich Radar, verbunden mit neuartigen Methoden der Signalverarbeitung und innovativen Technologien vom Mikrowellen- bis zum unteren Terahertzbereich.
