Independent Public Advocate
Standing with victims of major incidents
About Independent Public Advocate
The Independent Public Advocate (IPA) is a new statutory body introduced under the Victims and Prisoners Act 2024 to provide support and guidance to victims of major incidents that occur in England or Wales. The aftermath of a major incident involving the death of, or serious harm to, a significant number of people is deeply distressing for both the bereaved and injured. The processes that follow can be complex and unfamiliar. They can be daunting and often involve multiple agencies. The IPA provides clear, impartial support in the immediate aftermath of a major incident and throughout investigations, inquests, and inquiries - helping victims understand their rights and access the information they need, while amplifying their voices at every stage.
