About Journalism Growth Lab, LLC

Journalism Growth Lab supports nonprofit and independent news organizations through high-touch, one-on-one coaching focused on audience strategy, revenue priorities, and execution. Founded in 2018, the Lab has worked across the journalism ecosystem as a coach, research partner, and field-builder. From 2020 to 2025, much of this work centered on professional development and capacity-building for newsroom teams and creator journalists through programs with partners such as the Google News Initiative and LION Publishers. Today, the Lab’s work is intentionally focused. Phillip Smith partners directly with a small number of publishers each year to help them make harder decisions about what to prioritize, what to test, and what not to pursue as the media landscape continues to shift.
