We bring to market disruptive MedTech+AI that enables real-time tissue recognition for cancer diagnostics and treatment.
About Juvant medical
Technology overview Based on clinical needs, NKI (Netherlands Cancer Institute) surgeons and technicians have developed a technology platform making novel use of the interaction of light with tissue. The technology allows to make a highly specific “optical fingerprint “ of the tissue examined, able to differentiate real-time healthy tissue from tumor tissue, applicable for many tumor types. Robust clinical results Accuracy of the technology was tested in 10+ studies, enrolling 750+ patients with breast, colorectal, liver, sarcoma or lung cancer. All studies showed sensitivity to detect tumor tissue of ≥ 90%, with specificity and accuracy of >85%. Unmet need Globally, 20+ million cancer cases are diagnosed annually. Diagnostic pathways can be cumbersome and slow (up to several days) while surgical treatment might be inaccurate resulting in tumor tissue left behind in up to 20% of the surgical procedures, depending on tumor type. Residual tumor is a predictor for local recurrence, additional treatment and increased costs. Solution Juvant medical will expand the clinically proven NKI technology platform to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment by developing smart diagnostic and surgical tools that provide real-time tissue diagnosis with the following benefits: - Replacing inaccurate diagnostic and surgical procedures, - optimizing clinical workflows, - improving surgical accuracy and patient outcomes, - creating social and economic value. Product development roadmap The technology can be applied across the Oncology Care Cycle. Initially we will use the technology in SmartScan, a handheld device to analyze margins in real-time, verifying complete tumor removal ex vivo during breast conserving surgery. If the tumor has not been radically removed the surgeon can decide at the spot to resect additional tissue, preventing unwanted additional treatments.
