Legal Aid of North Carolina
North Carolina's nonprofit law firm, dedicated to serving the state's most vulnerable communities.
About Legal Aid of North Carolina
Every day, North Carolinians face life-changing civil legal issues such as domestic violence, unsafe housing, veteran benefits, disaster recovery, and consumer scams without access to legal help. Nearly 3.7 million North Carolinians are eligible for legal aid services, yet there is no guaranteed right to an attorney in civil cases. Without representation, people are more likely to lose their homes, remain in unsafe situations, lose access to income or healthcare, or struggle to recover after disasters. These unresolved legal problems place additional strain on courts, shelters, healthcare systems, and other community resources. Founded in 2002, Legal Aid of North Carolina is the only statewide nonprofit law firm providing free civil legal services in all 100 counties. We help people access trusted legal support when and where they need it most through direct representation, community outreach, legal clinics, self-help resources, and innovative tools such as JusticeHub and our AI-powered Legal Information Assistant. Services and resources are available in both English and Spanish. Each year, our team handles more than 25,000 cases and helps nearly 63,000 people, including more than 28,000 children. From helping survivors find safety and keeping families housed to securing critical benefits for seniors and veterans, our work creates safer, more stable communities across North Carolina. This impact is made possible through partnerships with courts, libraries, community organizations, private attorneys, law schools, local leaders, and generous supporters. Together, we are expanding access to justice and helping ensure more North Carolinians can get the legal help they need. There are many ways to support this work: • Donate at LegalAidNC.org/donate • Volunteer as a pro bono attorney at LegalAidNC.org/pro-bono • Request a visit from our LANCMobile at legalaidnc.org/lancmobile • Share our mission with your network • Explore resources at LegalAidNC.org
