The Misgav Institute for National Security and Zionist Strategy is an independent and non-partisan think tank that advances pragmatic and realistic approaches in Israeli foreign and defense policy, grounded in the values of Zionism. It seeks to strengthen Israel as a Jewish, democratic, strong, secure, and thriving state. The institute provides insights and policy recommendations on national security issues to Israel’s decision-makers and to the security and diplomatic establishments, to the global pro-Israel and Jewish community, and to the broad public. In addition, the institute seeks to empower the next generation of Israeli leaders in defense and diplomatic affairs. The institute’s proposals and policy papers are based on a combination of in-depth research and extensive practical and public sector experience. Its fellows express their views with integrity and independent thought, without political bias. Misgav takes a broad view of national security to include all matters which are critical to Israel’s future, including its independence, quality of life, territorial integrity, border and public security, resilience and domestic stability, international standing, critical resources, and ideological-foundational values. For Misgav, key principles of a pragmatic, realist, and clear-sighted national security approach include: Israel’s ability to defend itself by itself; applying sovereignty, governance and the rule of law in all areas of the country; willingness to take risks while avoiding gambling on security in an irreversible manner; maintaining continual progress, even if in small and measured steps; expanding global diplomatic ties, where, when and to the degree possible; preparation to take advantage of security and diplomatic opportunities when they present themselves; leveraging of the strategic, economic, & political strengths of Israel to create opportunities; and bolstering Israel’s strategic posture to strengthen its diplomatic relations.
