Coastal and dryland ecosystems are among the planet's most critical natural assets. Mangroves and seagrass store several times more carbon per hectare than tropical forests, form a natural barrier against coastal erosion and flooding, and host hundreds of threatened species alongside fisheries that feed over 100 million people. Drylands cover close to 40% of the Earth's land, regulate soil, water, and carbon, and support billions of people and nearly half of the world's cultivated systems. Yet these ecosystems are under mounting pressure. Half of the world's mangrove ecosystems are at risk of collapse by 2050, and 1 billion hectares of dryland are already degraded. Their role has never been more vital, and they have never been this exposed. Global commitments to protect and restore them are real and growing, but the tools to execute nature-based solutions at scale have lagged behind the ambition. Nature is critical physical infrastructure that requires ongoing management, monitoring, and intervention. Yet it has no standard operating system.
