About Nature Data Lab

The Nature Data Lab (NDL) is a philanthropic research organization housed at One Earth (OE), dedicated specifically to developing, managing, and publishing technical research and open-source software to accelerate the nature-positive transition. We have funded or led more than 40 research and technical collaborations, bringing together leading experts across an array of disciplines to help solve the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. Following a series of influential papers on nature conservation, and to better support demand for expanded data products and services associated with our award-winning Global Safety Net web application, we launched the Nature Data Lab (NDL) as an independent research organization. Data sets produced from these papers and other NDL scientific collaborations are made available on a dynamic web application called the Global Safety Net v3 (GSN3), which allows anyone to access maps and statistics on the extent and condition of natural land globally. NDL maintains three main data programs: (I) Ecological Priorities, (II) Nature Mapping, and (III) Conservation Justice. A fourth program, Earth Economy (IV), focuses on research to increase both public and private financial flows to support nature conservation and restoration. In 2025, the Nature Data Lab coordinated working groups with 27 funded research fellows who contributed to primary research, project scoping, data provisioning, GIS analytics, and technology development. Our diverse and brilliant fellows cover a wide array of disciplines – from ecology and conservation biology to remote sensing and mathematical economics – spanning five continents.
