About New Mexico State Investment Council
The State Investment Council oversees and manages more than $71 billion in permanent and endowment funds on behalf of New Mexicans. These investments contribute significant funds to the state’s budget. This fiscal year, we are set to send $2.5 billion to New Mexico helping to pay for the state’s public schools, universities, and many other government services. The indirect benefit to New Mexico taxpayers is about $3,000 per household – and growing. The significant funds we manage on behalf of New Mexicans are primarily from royalties and taxes from extractive industries like oil and gas production. As those industries gradually transition toward renewable resources in the coming years, declining oil revenue will be supplanted in part by the investment earnings generated by New Mexico’s permanent endowments. In terms of assets under management, we are the second largest sovereign wealth fund in the country and among the top 30 globally.
