The Tow-Knight Center for Journalism Futures is a catalyst for reimagining journalism in an AI-transformed information landscape. Based at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, the center explores how generative AI is changing not just how news is created, but how information flows to communities. We're exploring what AI can and cannot do for the news industry. Journalism will be reshaped by this technology, as it has been by every major technological shift. As an industry, we don't have the luxury of pessimism. Instead, we're examining both risks and opportunities: How can AI's capabilities better serve communities? What pitfalls must newsrooms navigate? How can the industry build better tools and find new models of engagement? The center engages with newsroom leaders, technologists, policymakers and news consumers to understand how AI is reshaping the entire information ecosystem. We build experimental prototypes — like tools that help audiences compare how different outlets cover the same story — and share our findings openly. Our research informs the broad range of stakeholders working to ensure quality journalism reaches people in the ways they're actually consuming information. Under the leadership of Executive Director Gina Chua and Program Director Adiel Kaplan, the center brings together forward-thinking experimentation and research with real-world newsroom experience. Chua, who also serves as executive editor-at-large at Semafor, has spent nearly four decades in journalism, leading newsrooms at Reuters, the South China Morning Post and The Wall Street Journal.
