About Bio Clean Carbon
Bio Clean Carbon is redefining wastewater treatment by turning it into a carbon-capturing and nutrient-recycling process. Using the natural capabilities of cyanobacteria, we operate open pond systems within wastewater facilities to capture CO₂ from the air and absorb nitrogen and phosphorus through photosynthesis. This process reduces greenhouse gases while recovering valuable nutrients that would otherwise cause eutrophication. Our cyanobacteria thrive even in harsh Nordic climates, making the system highly energy-efficient and compatible with existing pond infrastructure. The resulting biomass is converted into biochar through a low-energy pyrolysis process, locking carbon long-term and producing useful byproducts like pyrolysis gas and nutrient-rich biochar. The approach not only cuts emissions and pollution but also creates new revenue streams through CO₂, nitrogen, and phosphorus recovery. The Bio Clean Carbon solution stands out for its scalability, low energy demand, and easy integration with current wastewater facilities, delivering both economic and environmental benefits. Our work supports global sustainability goals (SDGs 6, 12, 13, and 15) and contributes directly to climate change mitigation and pollution reduction. We’ve completed successful pilot tests with municipal and industrial partners—achieving over 90% phosphate and 99% ammonium capture, mitigating nutrient runoff and eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems, and demonstrating CO₂ uptake seven times greater than conventional algae systems. In early 2026, we’ll begin pyrolysis trials with universities and farmers to confirm biochar’s fertilization potential.
