About Danube Commission
Established in 1948 by the Belgrade Convention, the Danube Commission (DC) is one of Europe's longest-standing intergovernmental organizations, with a core mission to facilitate and oversee a shared framework for safe and efficient navigation on the Danube River. It coordinates and cooperates with relevant navigation authorities, waterway administrations, and port authorities, as well as with the private sector and stakeholders across the ten Danube riparian states to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective transport of cargo and passengers on the Danube. The DC is addressing future challenges of Danube navigation, in particular, mitigating the impact of climate change and increasing resilience, modernizing the Danube fleet by preparing the transition to zero emission, ensuring digitalization and automation, securing a skilled workforce, and good working conditions. The DC provides technical assistance to EC/DG MOVE and is involved in strategic EU-funded projects, working closely with other river commissions and international organisations to strengthen cooperation in the inland waterway transport.
