Factland is a journalist-led 501(c)(3) building reskilling infrastructure and open-source tools for the technological transition — for journalists, communications professionals, academics, and knowledge workers shaping their next phase. More than five years in. Practitioner-owned, journalist-led, run by veterans of the transition — not consultants theorizing from outside. Three loops, one network: Build — devs build alongside the team at hackathons and builder sessions on Seed Protocol, PermaPress, and an early-stage decentralized AI stack. MIT-licensed public goods. Learn — cohort training for small teams at nonprofits, newsrooms, and mission-driven orgs, plus individual knowledge workers. Participants leave with portable operating systems on Obsidian + AI workflows that keep human judgment in the loop. Research — experimental sprints in decentralized AI, fact-checking protocols, and hyperlocal knowledge systems, in support of journalists and independent news. (NSF TechAccess LOI, June 2026.) This is reskilling for knowledge gardens, OS systems, and sovereign work — not agency AI training or funnel marketing. A next chapter: the founders built JournoDAO's foundation; after years as Factland's sister org, the two consolidated under the 501(c)(3) in 2026 — a communal container for building, learning, and research at the intersection of emergent technology and the craft of communicating. The flywheel runs in public. Follow the daily build here, or reach us at hello@factland.org.
