Transition Engineering is an emerging field of change management which helps businesses develop plans to deal with changes within their operating environment, from both commercial and sustainability perspectives. As a discipline, Transition Engineering recognises that "business as usual" projections of future scenarios from past trends are increasingly invalid, predominantly because underlying business conditions are changing rapidly when compared to conditions experienced in the past. The mission of Transition Engineers is to create innovations that disrupt the business as usual course, effectively manage the risks of un-sustainable practices and business limiting activity while avoiding stranded investment by recognising resource risks. Transition Engineers do this by providing a system of tools based on established good engineering practice to overcome barriers to change. This in turn allows organisations to identify new value chains, new opportunities to add services, and to identify business and engineering changes to ensure resilience, prosperity, stability and security for them and their customers. Transition Engineering as subject is represented by GATE – the Global Association of Transition Engineering.
