Great Hill Capital LLC is a New York–based long/short public equity manager founded by Thomas Hayes, serving qualified high-net-worth individuals, family offices, insurance companies, and other institutions through separately managed accounts. Our investment philosophy is simple: we buy good businesses at great prices. From time to time, public markets misappraise excellent companies surrounded by unusual circumstances. Stocks fall 50-80% on problems that are real but temporary, while underlying fundamentals remain only modestly impaired. We underwrite each share purchase as if we were acquiring the entire company, performing fundamental, bottom-up research to determine whether the dislocation reflects a permanent impairment or a temporary one the market is mispricing. We require four characteristics in every investment: (1) a balance sheet strong enough to survive until the thesis plays out; (2) shareholder-friendly management with skin in the game and a strong say-do ratio; (3) a durable moat proven through cycles; and (4) a concrete catalyst for value recognition. The result is a concentrated portfolio of 8-12 positions held over a 3-5 year horizon, targeting doubles and triples. We live by a modified version of Ben Graham's maxim: in the short term, the market is a voting machine (based on emotion); in the long term, it is a weighing machine (based on fundamentals). We are paid to wait for the weighing.
